The Ankeny girls’ swimming team won five events and easily defeated three opponents to capture the overall crown at the Grinnell Quadrangular on Thursday night.
The Hawkettes racked up a total of 372 points. Grinnell was second with 242, followed by Newton with 241 and Indianola with 128.
“It was nice to get three wins tonight!” said Ankeny coach Dustin Rhoads, whose squad is now 3-1 on the season. “More importantly though, I thought we improved as a team in a lot of areas.”
Ankeny got individual wins from Avery Anderson, Allie Kearney and Charlie Villhauer. The Hawkettes also won two of the three relay events.
Anderson won the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:05.84. She later took second in the 500 freestyle in 5:40.49.
Kearney captured the 200 individual medley in 2:23.65. She added a runner-up finish in the 100 backstroke, posting a time of 1:05.48.
Villhauer won the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:01.54. She later placed third in the 100 freestyle in 57.16 seconds.
Madi Trosper placed second in the butterfly behind Villhauer, posting a time of 1:05.14. She earlier took second in the 50 freestyle in 26.34 seconds.
Maggie Blackmore was the runner-up in the 100 freestyle. She was clocked in 56.77.

Kylee Stone finished third in the backstroke. She posted a time of 1:07.40.
Ankeny opened the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Trosper, Kearney, Villhauer and Blackmore posted a time of 1:57.21.
The Hawkettes also won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:46.39. That team consisted of Trosper, Abigail Brugman, Allie Breuner and Blackmore.
Blackmore and Breuner then teamed up with Kearney and Villhauer for a second-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay. Ankeny was clocked in 3:55.00.
“We were more confident and aggressive, and we were better at all of the little details that add up to having good swims and performances,” Rhoads said. “I thought our energy was much better tonight, and the girls created a fun team atmosphere that resulted in faster and better swims for most of our team than on Tuesday (in a loss at Waukee). I’m really proud of this group for how they responded from that meet. We still have a lot of work to do, but it was great to see improvement across the board tonight and to get to compete at one of the best facilities in the state of Iowa.”
In the diving event, Ankeny’s Kambelle Subbert placed fourth with a total of 196.90 points. Isla Corron placed fifth with 174.20 points, and Olivia Luna took sixth with 151.50.
“The divers were solid again,” Rhoads said. “It’s always interesting going to different pools that have different diving boards, but I thought they were consistent again with their dives and scores.”
Ankeny will host Mason City (0-4) in its home opener on Tuesday. The non-conference meet gets under way at 5:30 p.m. at Trail Point.
