Ankeny Centennial volleyball standouts Mya Lei-Butters and Tatem Schmidt were both named to the Class 5A all-tournament team after leading the Jaguars to a runner-up finish in the state tournament at Xtream Arena in Coralville.
Second-ranked Centennial dropped a 25-10, 25-21, 25-18 decision to No. 1 Waukee Northwest in the title match on Thursday morning. Schmidt finished with five kills, 11 assists and 12 digs, while Lei-Butters racked up a team-high 15 digs and completed all seven of her serves.
The Jaguars had lost in the semifinals in each of the previous three seasons.
“This is the farthest we’ve made it in the four years I’ve been here,” said Lei-Butters. “It was exciting to see us get this far.”
Centennial reached the championship for the first time since 2018 by sweeping No. 8 Iowa City West in the quarterfinals and No. 7 Valley in the semifinals. The Jaguars finished with a 34-6 record.
“They had a great week,” Centennial coach Jessica Rinehart said of her senior duo. “Both of them have been Steady Eddie all season long and six-rotation players. Mya has been a part of the program for all four years, which is very rare. They’re great teammates and great players, and they had a phenomenal week.”
Also selected to the all-tournament team were Leah Janulewicz, Avery Vogt and Logan Vogt of Northwest, Isabelle Kremer of Pleasant Valley and Kaelyn Wieland of Valley. Avery Vogt was named the captain of the squad.
