The Ankeny Centennial wrestlers finished with a 1-3 record in the Dion Cobb Duals on Saturday at Valley.
The Jaguars’ lone win came against Clear Creek Amana, 39-37, in their third dual of the day. Brandon Bogseth posted an 11-1 major decision over Dylan Schrock at 215 pounds to seal the victory, giving Centennial a 39-31 lead with just one match left.
“We started out pretty sluggish, but came around finally and got one in the win column,” said Centennial coach Jay Groth, whose team is now 1-7 on the season. “We wrestled better there and then we wrestled Indianola, and they’re tough. But we competed.”
The Jaguars closed out the tournament with a 56-14 loss to Indianola, which went 4-0 on the day to win the crown. The Indians recorded three pins and three technical falls against Centennial.
The Jaguars earlier suffered losses to Iowa City West, 51-26, and Valley, 53-20. The matchup against the Tigers was designated a CIML Conference dual.
“It was a mixed bag,” Groth said of the tournament. “Iowa City West is a good team, but we’re young. It was the first time when we just had a one hour weigh-in instead of two hours for most other events. I think after Christmas break some kids getting down to weight, even though we get an extra two pounds, need to manage that better. We had some kids doing things the wrong way right after weigh-in and then had to wrestle in 10 minutes.”
Senior Cale Vandermark went unbeaten on the day for Centennial. After dropping down to 126 pounds for the first time this season, Vandermark recorded four consecutive technical falls while outscoring his opponents by a 79-18 margin.
Clear Creek Amana jumped out to a 16-0 lead over the Jaguars before Vandermark won by a technical fall over Madox Schmitz, 19-4, in 1 minute 36 seconds.
Centennial then got five consecutive falls from Will Sloan at 132, Brady Babcock at 138, Raymani James at 144, Ethan Sodergren at 150 and Dean Landis at 157. That gave the Jaguars a 35-16 advantage, setting the stage for Bogseth’s clinching win four matches later.
Bogseth finished the tournament with a perfect 4-0 mark. He had one fall and a pair of major decisions.
“That was the first time he’s wrestled all season, and he looked pretty good for his first time out,” Groth said. “I was pleased with how he went out there and competed. He’s a good athlete and a good wrestler, and it was good to have him back in the lineup.”
Landis went 3-1 for Centennial with a trio of falls. Sodergren also went 3-1 with two pins and a technical fall.
“Both of those guys wrestled well,” Groth said. “We’re getting closer, but we’re still working on getting everybody where they need to be.”
The Jaguars will travel to Oskaloosa on Thursday for a double dual meet against the Indians and Dallas Center-Grimes.
