Both the Ankeny and Ankeny Centennial wrestling teams had multiple placewinners in the Jack Mendenhall Invitational on Saturday at Ames.
The Hawks placed fifth in the 15-team field with 141.5 points. They had nine top-eight finishers.
Centennial, meanwhile, took ninth with 83.5 points. The Jaguars had six placewinners.
“We didn’t bring a full group, but I thought the guys who wrestled had some good performances,” said Centennial coach Jay Groth.
Marmion Academy of Aurora, Ill., captured the team title with 257.5 points. Dowling Catholic was the runner-up with 206.
Ankeny was led by sophomore Calvin Rathjen, who won the 165-pound title. He raised his record to 12-0 with a 6-3 decision in the finals over Brody Warrick of Boone, who lost for the first time in 14 matches this season.
It was the second straight title for Rathjen, who won at 132 as a freshman.
Placing second on Saturday were Kash Johnson of Ankeny at 175 and Cale Vandermark of Centennial at 126.
Johnson recorded a pair of falls before being pinned by Eli Forcier of Waverly-Shell Rock in 5 minutes 46 seconds. He is now 3-1 on the season.
Vandermark was Centennial’s lone finalist. He notched two technical falls before dropping a 4-0 decision to Aidan McClure of Marmion Academy.
Vandermark’s record is now 17-3.
“Cale just needs to open up his offense more,” Groth said.

Ankeny got a third-place finish from Ryne Dobson at 215, while Brandon Bogseth took fourth for the Jaguars at that weight. Dobson pinned Bogseth in 6:00 in the third-place match to improve to 17-6.
Bogseth, who had earlier dropped a 10-1 major decision to Dobson in the quarterfinals, is now 8-3.
Placing fourth for the Hawks were Eddie Salgado at 113, Caleb Alhussaini at 132 and Ryleigh Egeberg at 190. Aiden Winkie took fifth at 138, while Gavyn Gatewood was seventh at 157.
Lucas Haase at 106 and Jacob Haase at 150 each finished eighth. Lucas Haase pinned Centennial’s Brenden Harless in 1:03 in a second-round consolation match, avenging a 15-6 loss last month.
Centennial got fifth-place finishes from Ethan Sodergren at 150 and Ben Rotert at 165. Sodergren recorded a 15-0 technical fall over Jacob Haase in the quarterfinals.
Dean Landis placed sixth for the Jaguars at 157. Will Sloan finished seventh at 132.
Both teams will be back in action on Thursday. The Jaguars will host a CIML Conference dual meet against Waukee, while Ankeny will travel to Dowling for a conference meet against the Maroons.
