After a 2-0 weekend in the circle to secure the conference series over Houston Christian, former Ankeny pitcher Kendra Winfrey of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team took home Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week honors, the league office announced on Monday.
Winfrey was pivotal in the Islanders’ series at HCU, tossing a complete game to win game one before entering the rubber match and throwing five shutout innings in relief to secure her second triumph of the weekend and the team’s series victory. She is now 7-7 on the season.
Winfrey gave up just one run through 12 innings of work for a 0.58 ERA on the weekend. In game one, she struck out eight batters while limiting the Huskies to just three hits. In game three, she shut HCU down in the final five innings with no runs and just three hits while sitting down four on strikeouts.
Winfrey now has four complete-game outings under her belt this season, including three in conference play. She currently boasts a 12-18 career mark with a 5.47 ERA.
“We are so proud of Kendra’s growth and development throughout the course of this season,” said head coach Mark Montgomery. “She is a wonderful young person and an absolute joy to coach.”
