Iowa State women’s basketball legend Ashley Joens has been named the new head coach of the Ankeny girls’ basketball program.
Joens finished her career in 2023 as Iowa State’s all-time leading scorer with 3,060 points, which ranks ninth in NCAA Division I history. She started all 158 of her career games with the Cyclones and was a three-time winner of the Cheryl Miller award, honoring the nation’s top small forward.
Joens was a two-time all-American and a four-time unanimous all-Big 12 first-team pick. She was selected with the No. 19 pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft by the Dallas Wings.
Joens replaces Nate Tobey, who resigned after guiding Ankeny to a 39-32 record over the last three seasons. The Hawkettes went 16-9 this season and reached the semifinals of the Class 5A state tournament.
We will have much more on Joens’ hiring later.
