Cal Wahlberg scored a pair of goals off assists from Keaton Kobow to lead the Ankeny boys’ soccer team to a 2-1 victory over visiting Davenport North in a non-conference game on Saturday.
It was the first win of the season for the Hawks (1-2), who bounced back from a 4-3 loss to visiting Indianola in another non-conference game on Friday. Both contests were played at Northview Stadium.
“We are growing in our identity, and now we will have to see if we can continue that on Tuesday,” said Ankeny coach Trevor Fuccio.

Saturday’s game was tied at 1-1 at halftime. Wahlberg then scored the game-winner in the second half, when the Wildcats (0-1-2) were unable to answer.
Fuccio was proud of the way his team responded after a tough loss the night before.

“Friday was disappointing because three of the four goals came off crucial errors in our end, and we lacked the willingness to be physical and tackle,” he said. “But on Saturday we fixed that. Our back line played really well, and our midfield battled.”
Most of the scoring on Friday came in the first half, which ended in a 3-3 tie. Indianola (2-1) then scored the go-ahead goal in the second half for the game-winner.

The senior duo of Wahlberg and Kobow accounted for all three of Ankeny’s goals. Kobow had two goals and an assist, while Wahlberg contributed a goal and two assists.
Jackson Dockendorff made six saves for the Hawks, but it wasn’t enough as Indianola’s Max Martinez racked up two goals and two assists. Teammate Samuel Nochvay also had two goals.
Ankeny will travel to Dowling Catholic on Tuesday for a CIML Conference game against the Maroons (0-2-1).
