The Ankeny Centennial volleyball team bounced back from Tuesday’s loss at top-ranked Waukee Northwest by winning three of four matches in the East vs. West Showdown on Saturday at Xtream Arena in Coralville.
The No. 5 Jaguars, who were again without injured senior Ellie Pollock, improved to 19-7 on the season.
“The Jags were great today!” said Centennial coach Jessica Rinehart. “It was a full team effort throughout the whole day.”
Centennial opened the tournament with a 21-18, 21-8 victory over No. 8 Cedar Falls. The Jaguars then dropped a 22-20, 21-14 decision to No. 6 Iowa City West.
After rebounding with a 21-18, 21-14 win over Class 3A No. 3 Dike-New Hartford, Centennial closed out the day with a 21-17, 21-18 triumph over No. 9 Iowa City Liberty.
The Jaguars had earlier defeated Dike-New Hartford and Iowa City Liberty during pool play at the Centennial Early Bird Invitational on Aug. 29.
“We had a lot of players step up and do their jobs,” Rinehart said. “We had great leadership and energy on the court and from our bench. I’m really proud of how we rebounded from Tuesday and stepped up to the challenge today!”
Centennial will now be off until next Saturday, when the Jaguars will try to defend their title in the Westside Invitational at Cedar Rapids Jefferson.
