The season came to an end on Monday for the Ankeny Centennial boys’ golf team.
The Jaguars shot a 312 in a Class 4A district meet at Willow Creek in LeMars, but it wasn’t good enough to place among the top three squads.
“It was a tough day,” said Centennial coach Andrew Reedy. “We battled some wind and quick greens, and the kids struggled with both.”
Council Bluffs Lincoln pulled off a stunning victory to capture the district crown, posting a 293 total. The Lynx entered the meet ranked 38th in Class 4A.
Lincoln was led by senior Brody Sneed, who carded a 7-under-par 64 to earn medalist honors by seven strokes over Chase Perrin of Dallas Center-Grimes.
“We knew (Sneed) was capable of going low and was a favorite to earn an individual spot,” Reedy said. “But we didn’t expect (Lincoln) to win.”
No. 7 Waukee placed second in the 14-team field with a 295. No. 3 Dallas Center-Grimes took third with a 297 and also qualified for the state meet, which is slated for Oct. 12-13 at Davenport Country Club.
Seth Frankele of Sioux City North and Wyatt Leners of LeMars were the individual qualifiers for state. They placed third with a 71 and fifth with a 72, respectively.
Colby Zinn carded a 74 to lead Centennial. He placed 10th in a field of 84 golfers.
“Colby played just his second varsity event of the season and played some great golf today,” Reedy said. “He just had some trouble down the stretch. He had it to 1-under-par through 14 holes, but made a few mistakes at the end, including a double bogey on his last hole when we got aggressive thinking we needed a birdie to qualify individually. In hindsight, a par would have qualified him individually. We both would love to have that one back.”
Everett Bloyer and Kinnick Nelson each shot a 79 for the Jaguars. Ricky Beckwith fired an 80, Nathan Grider had an 83, and Charlie Knoll added an 85.
“The rest of the kids had a great attitude and approach leading up to the event and to start the round,” Reedy said. “They prepared effectively and gave their absolute best effort. We just got into a slide for a while and couldn’t right the ship. I am proud of how they came together as a group the last couple of weeks and am disappointed for our seniors.”
