The Ankeny volleyball team was on the verge of a sweep in its season opener on Tuesday at Waukee.
After winning the first two sets, the sixth-ranked Hawkettes battled No. 11 Waukee down to the wire in the third set. The Warriors then scored the final two points to emerge with a 26-24 victory, and it turned the non-conference match around.
Waukee went on to post a 19-25, 21-25, 26-24, 25-21, 15-11 triumph over the Hawkettes. The Warriors also posted a five-set win over Ankeny on the same court last season, when both teams were members of the CIML Central Conference.
Haley Bush had 18 kills to lead the Warriors, who are now part of the CIML Iowa Conference. Kate Nelson had seven blocks, and Layanna Green added six aces.
The Hawkettes will be back in action on Saturday at the Ankeny Centennial Invitational.
