The season is off to a good start for the Ankeny bowling teams under new head coach Lane Richtsmeier.
The boys’ team defeated Valley by a score of 2,879 to 2,474 on Tuesday at Great Escape. The girls’ squad also won their opener against the Tigers, 2,301 to 2,276.
The boys’ junior varsity team was victorious as well.
“As a first-time coach and my first ever meet, I couldn’t be more proud of how the team bowled and acted like a team,” said Richtsmeier. “And taking a win in all three events on the first meet, wow! I couldn’t believe it…I am very pleased with how the team handled themselves and fought to the very end.”
Gage Payton bowled a 426 series to lead the Hawks, including a 220 in his second game. Aidan Doruska bowled a 233 in his second game to finish with a 412 total.
Chris Winters had a 379 series, Brandon Schumacher bowled a 355, Blake Schumacher had a 312, and Matt Seery added a 241.
The boys’ team racked up a 995 total in its five Baker games, including a high of 238 in the second game.
Isabel Tetmeyer led the Hawkettes to their narrow win. She bowled back-to-back games of 201 and 234 for a 435 series.
Cynthia Angran had a 306 total, Alexa Bowers bowled a 300, Emma Harris had a 295, Beth Scoular rolled a 228, and Naomi Schrader Bacher added a 181.
“Every one of them worked very hard in practice at trying new things and being open-minded,” Richtsmeier said. “I couldn’t ask for much more from them. Someone commented to me, ‘It looks like they were having fun!’ And that’s what it is all about!
“What an amazing start. I can’t wait to see how the rest of the season goes,” he added.
The Ankeny teams will be back in action on Thursday, when they face Des Moines Lincoln at Bowlerama Lanes.
