Ankeny bowling coach Lane Richtsmeier decided to leave the girls on his team alone during Friday’s dual meet against visiting Urbandale at Great Escape.
The Hawkettes were doing just fine under the direction of assistant coach Brianna McCann.
The Ankeny girls’ squad went on to defeat Urbandale by a score of 2,458 to 2,112. They improved to 4-0 on the season.
“It was another great win for the girls,” said Richtsmeier. “I think I checked in on them two or three times and saw they were doing great, so I left them alone with coach Brianna and went back to the boys! The girls are unbeaten, and I couldn’t be happier. They are bowling really great!”
Isabel Tetmeyer led the Hawkettes with a 388 series. She has posted the top individual score at three of the four meets.
Emma Harris bowled a 336. Alexa Bowers rolled a 310, Lynn Cronk had a 261, Cynthia Angran bowled a 255, and Madie Parker finished with a 191.
The Ankeny boys’ team, meanwhile, suffered its second straight loss. The Hawks lost to Urbandale by a score of 2,815 to 2,761.
“It was a tough loss for the boys,” Richtsmeier said. “After the second game of bakers, we were down 133 pins. So to lose only by 54 pins, I was super proud of how they battled back and didn’t give up. We just ran out of time.”
Gage Payton led the Hawks with a 392 series. Alex Gates bowled a 383.
Blake Schumacher followed with a 372, Logan Roberts had a 347, Michael Winters rolled a 341, and Aiden Doruska added a 325.
The Ankeny teams will host another non-conference meet against Des Moines Hoover on Tuesday at Great Escape. They will travel to Mason City on Friday for a CIML Iowa Conference matchup against the Mohawks.
“We have a pretty busy schedule for the month of January and some tough competition coming up, but I have all the faith in the world in my team right now!” Richtsmeier said.
