The Ankeny girls’ bowling team finally got to play on a level playing field.
The Hawkettes responded on Tuesday with their first victory of the season.
Ankeny defeated Gilbert by a score of 1,506 to 1,458 in a non-conference dual meet at Perfect Games. The Hawkettes improved their record to 1-9, while Gilbert dropped to 0-7.
“It was a big win for the girls, and they earned it,” said Ankeny coach Lane Richtsmeier. “With Gilbert only having four girls as well, we knew we had a chance. The girls bowled great and had their best score of the season.”
Kali Ogg led Ankeny with a 261 series, including a 150 in her first game. Lynn Cronk bowled a 254, Marissa Larson-Minar had a 221, and Lilianna Sinclair added a 203.
The Hawkettes led by 57 pins after the individual rounds. They then held on for the win.
Gilbert won the boys’ meet by a score of 2,631 to 2,381. The Tigers are now 7-1, while Ankeny suffered its fourth straight loss and dropped to 2-8.
Blake Schumacher led the Hawks with a 367 series. He bowled back-to-back games of 186 and 181.
Aidan Doruska rolled a 328, Kole Jordan had a 305, Chase Jordan bowled a 290, Jackson Roberts had a 280, and Jay Miller added a 264.
Gilbert built a 210-pin advantage in the individual rounds. Cole Pflughaupt had a 441 series for the Tigers, who then won the bakers round by 40 pins.
The Ankeny teams will host a CIML Iowa Conference dual meet against Marshalltown on Thursday at Great Escape.
