During high school, Jayce Goergen was a productive point guard for the Ankeny Christian Academy boys’ basketball team who often passed first before taking a shot himself.
Now a junior on the Faith Baptist Bible College men’s basketball squad, Goergen has become more of a scoring threat at the collegiate level.
On Monday, the 5-foot 10-inch guard scored his 1,000th career point during the Eagles’ 64-46 victory over Emmaus Bible College. He led all scorers with 21 points and was honored by the school after the game.
“It means a lot to me to reach this milestone. I was humbled and honored,” Goergen said. “It was a surprise when they announced it after our game. Celebrating with my coaches and teammates that helped me get to that point was such a treat. Whenever a player reaches a goal like this, it is always a group effort. This is a testament to how hard we work as a team to encourage and support each other.”
Goergen was a three-year starter at ACA who helped the Eagles to a 76-17 record from 2015-19. He scored 867 points in 93 career games while dishing out 337 assists.
After graduating from ACA, Goergen moved a block away to the Faith Baptist campus, where he has started nearly every game in his career. He averaged 11.9 points per game as a freshman, then blossomed into a team leader as a sophomore when he averaged 18.3 points.
This season, Goergen is averaging 13.5 points. After missing four games in mid-January due to an illness, he has averaged 21.5 points over the last two games for the Eagles (6-10).
Goergen entered his junior season with 827 points. He now has 1,003 career points heading into Friday’s game against Ozark Christian College.
“I knew starting the season that it would be a goal that I could possibly accomplish this year, but as the season has gone on, I forgot that I was getting close to it,” Goergen said.
