Senior guard Logan Fincham helped the Ankeny Christian Academy boys’ basketball team to a 15-8 record this season.
Fincham averaged a team-high 13.8 points per game. He shot 35.8 percent from 3-point range (24-of-67) and 81.7 percent at the free-throw line (58-of-71).
Here is some inside info on Fincham:
Congratulations on an outstanding season. What was the highlight for you?
Thank you. I had a lot of fun this year! That’s a tough one. I would have to say beating Denver (68-59) in our third game after Christmas break. I had a great game (with 21 points, seven rebounds and four assists), and the atmosphere was electric!
How would you describe your role on the squad?
My role was to bring us energy. I would usually guard one of the opponent’s top players, and that helped give energy for our team on the offensive end. I was also the leading scorer on the team.
Did you try to be a leader for the team?
I tried to be the best leader I could for the younger guys, encouraging them after games and helping them gain confidence in their game, but I would give a lot of credit to Malachi Johnson for his leadership on the team this year.
Were you happy with how you played?
Overall, I was pretty happy with the way I played this year. I felt like there were some times where I could’ve given more effort, but I feel like I had a pretty good year.
Did you attend any of the games at the state tournament or watch them online?
I attended the Monday games and most of the Wednesday games. I wasn’t able to make it Friday due to a family vacation, but I did watch the championship online.
Were you surprised that top-seeded Grand View Christian lost to North Linn in the Class 1A championship game?
Going into the tournament I thought GVC would easily win the championship. That was, until I watched North Linn play. After seeing North Linn play on Monday and watching GVC go to overtime with Bellevue, I wasn’t so sure GVC would win. So it wasn’t a big surprise to me that North Linn beat GVC.
ACA will have to replace four starters from this team, including yourself. Do you think the Eagles can be pretty competitive next year?
There were six seniors this year, and five of us have been playing with each other since fifth grade. But I think that the (younger) guys have a lot of potential. Cade Wierck was our fifth starter this year, and he will be a junior next year. This year’s sophomore class is a great group of guys that have a lot of potential if they work at it. I believe they will be a pretty competitive group next year.
The Iowa High School Athletic Association is putting a shot clock into effect next year. Do you think it’s a good idea, and do you think it’ll be much of an adjustment for the players?
Personally, I think it’s a great idea. It will allow for faster-paced games and get rid of stalling for long periods of time. I think that the beginning of the year might be tough for some players, but by the end of the year it shouldn’t affect them that much.
Plans for next year?
I am attending Faith Baptist Bible College for organizational leadership (business), and I will be playing basketball for my dad (Brian). This is something I have really been looking forward to my whole life. I have always sat on the bench with him, and I have always wanted to play for him and next year I believe we have the chance to win a NCCAA championship.
What will you miss the most about ACA?
I am really going to miss high school basketball at ACA. This team’s culture is so amazing. We are all at practice to get better, but we have fun while we are doing it and that is what has made the last four years so fun.
Did you fill out a March Madness bracket? If so, who did you pick to win it?
I did fill a bracket out. I have the Zags winning it all this year.
