Kira Smith and the Ankeny girls’ tennis team dominated the Boone Invitational on Friday.
Smith won the No. 1 singles flight without losing a single game in three matches, and the Hawkettes easily captured the overall crown with 143 points. They won five of the six flights in the four-team tournament.
“The results this year show both how much we’ve improved over last year–when we placed third at this tournament–and just how deep our team is,” said Ankeny coach Steve Smith, whose squad lost only two matches on the day.
Smith, a freshman, scored 33 of Ankeny’s points. She posted 11-0 victories over all three of her opponents from Boone, Des Moines Lincoln and Indianola.
“Kira was dominant,” said Smith, her father. “She lost only four points in her entire second match.”
Sophie Laib also went 3-0 for the Hawkettes at No. 3 singles. She won three close matches, scoring a total of 20 points.
The No. 1 doubles team of Anna Schmitz and Sydney Otto went 3-0 as well, and so did the No. 2 doubles team of Tori Johnson and Lauren Osburn. Johnson and Osburn racked up 27 points.
The No. 3 doubles team of Payton Blume and Emily Byrnes also won their flight. They went 2-1 on the day, dropping only a 7-4 decision to Boone.
Sophie Schmitz also went 2-1 at No. 2 singles and placed second. She posted a pair of 9-2 wins after falling to Indianola, 6-5.
“Sophie won 23 of 28 games after going down 5-0 in her first match,” Smith said. “Overall, I was pleased with how the team competed in both the varsity and JV flights.”
The Hawkettes will travel to Mason City on Monday for a CIML Iowa Conference matchup.
