When the fog finally lifted on Thursday morning, the conditions turned out to be great for the Toni Dickey Invitational on Thursday at Otter Creek Golf Course.
The host Ankeny girls’ golf squad placed eighth in the 13-team field. The Hawkettes posted a score of 394.
“It turned out to be a beautiful day,” said Ankeny coach Seth Hagarty. “Even though we had an hour delay to start the day due to the fog.”
Ankeny Centennial finished in fourth place. The Jaguars shot a 372.
“We were very happy with the final results,” said Centennial coach John Petersen. “372 is again our low for the year, and we feel like we could have shot lower.”
Valley, the two-time defending state champion, won the meet for the fourth straight year. The Tigers shot a 326.
Clear Lake, last year’s third-place finisher in Class 3A, was the runner-up with a 340. Marshalltown placed third with a 345.
Valley’s Saffire Sayre carded a 1-over-par 72 to earn medalist honors. Rylee Heryford of Newton placed second with a 73.
Payton Drefke fired an 84 to lead Centennial. She placed ninth as an individual.
Kaitlyn Ault shot a 94 to finish 18th for the Jaguars. Olivia Joensen had a 95, Grace Miller carded a 99, Olivia Wilson had a 105, and Samantha Lazear added a 115.
“I love our girls’ attitudes!” Petersen said.
Naomi SchraderBachar shot a 93 to lead Ankeny. She placed 16th.
“Naomi had a fabulous round today and shot her personal best,” Hagarty said.
Gabby Schnepf carded a 99 for the Hawkettes. Gia Blaser had a 100, Isabella Ross fired a 102, Addison Smith had a 108, and Olivia Froehlich finished with a 112.
“The girls kind of had up and down rounds, and that’s a bit to be expected as we truly haven’t had a lot of time to put in the time to practice!” Hagarty said. “However, we improved our team score from the last invite, so I’d say it was a good day. We know we still have work to do but the best part is that this group of girls will most certainly put the time in to get better as the season progresses!”
Ankeny will compete in the Turk Bowman Invitational on Monday at Veenker Golf Course in Ames. Centennial will play in the Linn-Mar Invitational on Tuesday at Hunters Ridge Golf Course in Marion.
