Former Ankeny player Andrew Reedy has been named the new head coach of the Ankeny Centennial boys’ golf team.
Reedy replaces Rick Fee, who resigned from his position last fall after guiding the program for eight years.
“I’m super excited,” said Reedy. “I can’t wait to get started.”
As a senior at Ankeny in 2001, Reedy placed second on the team with a 37.7 average. He carded a 78 to lead the Hawks to a fourth-place finish at a Class 4A district meet.
Reedy is in his sixth year as the golf pro at Des Moines Golf and Country Club.
“I got back in the golf business in 2018, and in my career progression I would say that my dream job would be to coach at the college level at some point,” Reedy said. “So this is a natural stepping stone for me. But, I’m not looking too far ahead either. I’d like to be at Centennial for however long it works out with my schedule and my boss gives me his blessing and really supports me. It works out.”
This is Reedy’s first coaching job at the high school level. However, he has a lot of experience working with young golfers.
“I have a vested interest in growing the game of golf,” he said. “I’m the junior golf coordinator at Des Moines Golf and Country Club, so I’ve been working with kids from ages 5-17 on a regular basis. I currently coach a lot of kids who play at other metro schools. I think I have a pretty good track record of developing players.”
Zach Hoffman will be Centennial’s top returning player next fall. Tate Logan also has some varsity experience.
Reedy said he plans to have coffee this week with Jon Olson, who served as Centennial’s head coach in 2013-14. Olson guided the Jaguars to the Class 4A state title in their inaugural season as a program.
“Jon is a friend of mine,” Reedy said. “I’d like to pick his brain a little bit.”
Dean Smith, who served as Fee’s assistant coach, will remain with the program.
“He’s definitely someone I’ll lean on a lot,” Reedy said.
