University of Iowa sophomore pitcher Brody Brecht was named a third-team all-American, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced on Wednesday.
It is the third straight year a Hawkeye starting pitcher has earned all-America distinction (Adam Mazur and Trenton Wallace). Brecht, a former Ankeny star, is the 11th player to earn all-America honors under head coach Rick Heller and the 25th Hawkeye all-time.
Brecht earned third-team honors after going 5-2 with a 3.74 ERA in 16 starts. The righthander posted four quality starts and fanned 109 batters over 77 innings. He leads the nation in hits allowed per nine innings (4.32).
Brecht was named a freshman all-American by Collegiate Baseball and Perfect Game a year ago.
The Hawkeyes finished the 2023 season with a 44-16 overall record with the 44 wins tied for most in program history. Iowa finished third in the Big Ten regular season standings, advanced to the Big Ten Tournament finals and the team won two games at the Terre Haute Regional in Iowa’s first NCAA Regional appearance since 2017.
Earlier, Brecht was also invited to the 2023 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Training Camp in Cary, N.C.
The camp will feature 56 of the premier non-draft eligible college players for a four-game Stars vs. Stripes intrasquad series in North Carolina from June 25-28. USA Baseball will name a final, 26-man Collegiate National Team roster after Training Camp that will represent the United States in friendship series against Chinese Taipei and Japan from June 30-July 12.
All four Training Camp games will be played at the USA Baseball National Training Complex. The series begins on June 25 at 2 p.m. (CT), with three games following over the next three days. Game two will be on June 26 at 5 p.m., game three on June 27 at 6 p.m., and game four on June 28 at 5 p.m.
