Former Ankeny football standout Quincy Griffith is coming back to central Iowa.
Griffith has been named the offensive line coach by new Drake head coach Joe Woodley, who took over the Bulldogs’ program after guiding Grand View to the NAIA national championship.
“I knew coach Woodley a little bit just professionally,” said Griffith. “And when he got the job, I had a few people reach out on my behalf and he called me a few days later.”
Griffith spent the 2024 season as a graduate assistant coach at Iowa, where he helped George Barnett coach the Hawkeyes’ offensive line. He was hired the day after returning from Iowa’s trip to the Music City Bowl.
“I’m excited to be back in Des Moines,” Griffith said.
In a press release, Woodley said that he’d been watching Griffith’s ascension in the coaching profession from afar.
“Quincy is a guy that I have always had my eye on in this profession,” he said. “He has been one of those guys that has always tried to challenge himself with each job he took. He most recently served as an assistant OL coach at the University of Iowa and learned under the master OL coach, Kirk Ferentz, as well as another guy I have a ton of respect for, George Barnett. Quincy is a fiercely loyal Iowan from Ankeny and played his college ball at tradition-rich Wartburg. Our OL will love playing for him.”
Griffith was a four-year offensive lineman at Wartburg, where he won two IIAC titles and was twice named an all-IIAC player. He started his coaching experience at the prep level as a defensive line coach at Carlisle High School, then moved up to the collegiate ranks as the linebackers coach at Illinois Wesleyan and the tight ends coach at the University of Central Missouri.
Griffith then spent three years at Wayne State in multiple roles before briefly going to Simpson College prior to taking the position at Iowa. This past season, he assisted in coaching the Big Ten’s best offensive line and top rushing attack while instructing five all-Big Ten Conference offensive linemen.
“I’m incredibly excited to join coach Woodley’s staff at Drake,” Griffith said. “Coach Woodley is a winner who values passion and toughness out of his football teams, and I’m thrilled for the opportunity to coach our players to be passionate and tough on and off the field. I’m excited to be back to my home of central Iowa, working hard to represent Des Moines’ college football team! Go Bulldogs!”
