
Ankeny’s Johanna Shaw has qualified for the girls’ state bowling tournament.
While Shaw placed fourth as an individual during Monday’s Class 3A regional meet at Bowlerama Lanes, the Ankeny girls’ team saw its season come to an end. Coach Nick Payton’s squad placed fifth in the eight-team field with a score of 2,200.
Des Moines Lincoln won the team title with a total of 2,802. Ottumwa posted a score of 2,745 and also qualified for state, which will be held next week at Cadillac Lanes in Waterloo.
The team competition consisted of 15 bakers games. Ankeny bowled a 176 in its third game and moved into first place with a 482 total, but had a 105 in its next game and fell out of the lead.
Shaw, a senior, bowled a three-game series of 605 to qualify for state. She posted scores of 181, 192 and 232.
The top eight individuals advanced to state. Lincoln teammates Vicki Andrews and Michelle Wilson led the way with scores of 706 and 663, respectively.
Ankeny’s Olivia Harris bowled a 215 in her third game and finished ninth overall with a 540 total, but the junior just missed qualifying for state. Abby Huitt of Southeast Polk was the last individual qualifier with a 554 series.
Kali Ogg and Savannah Dye closed out their high school careers on Monday. Ogg bowled a 453 series, while Dye finished with a 386 total.
Juniors Brooklyn Dietz and Ava Johnson will be back next year along with Harris. Dietz rolled a 323 on Monday, while Johnson finished with a 314.
The Ankeny boys’ team will compete in a Class 3A district meet on Tuesday at Plaza Bowl in Sioux City.
