
Former Ankeny star JJ Kohl has re-entered the transfer portal.
The 6-foot-7, 240-pound quarterback passed for 1,465 yards and 12 touchdowns while helping Appalachian State to a 5-7 record this season. He played in eight games and started six of the last eight.
Kohl led the Mountaineers to a 27-23 victory over Oregon State in his first collegiate start on Oct. 4. He also started in wins over Georgia State and Marshall.
Appalachian State is slated to play Georgia Southern in the JLab Birmingham Bowl on Dec. 29.
Kohl was a two-time all-stater at Ankeny, where he passed for 4,208 yards and 42 touchdowns in his career. He helped the Hawks to a runner-up finish in Class 5A as a junior in 2021.
Kohl, who was rated a four-star quarterback by all four major recruiting outlets, spent his first two collegiate seasons at Iowa State. He played in three games as a true freshman in 2023, completing 9-of-11 passes for 23 yards.
Kohl will have two years of eligibility remaining.
