During the first two meets of the season, Drake Ellgren didn’t look like the top returning player for the Ankeny Centennial boys’ golf team.
On Monday, he did.
The junior carded a 1-over-par 37 to earn medalist honors in a dual meet at the Urbandale Golf and Country Club, where he led the Jaguars to a 155-181 victory over Urbandale. The win improved Centennial’s record to 2-0 in the CIML Central Conference.
“The boys played well in the windy conditions,” said Centennial coach Rick Fee. “It was the first time there for all the players. We are starting to play better as a group and more consistent.”
Ellgren led the Jaguars with a 39.9 average last year, but he had struggled thus far this season. He shot a 90 at the Iowa City West Invitational on Aug. 13, then fired an 82 in a dual meet against Ames on Aug. 17 at Briarwood Golf Club.
Centennial was slated to play in the Fort Dodge Invitational on Tuesday, but the meet has been postponed due to a rainy forecast. The Jaguars will play a dual meet against Johnston on Wednesday at Jester Park.
“We are excited to see how we play against Johnston since they are one of the best teams in the metro,” Fee said.
