The Ankeny Centennial girls’ tennis team closed out the regular season on Tuesday with a 7-4 loss at Urbandale in a CIML Central Conference dual meet.
The Jaguars won a pair of matches in singles and two more in doubles, but it wasn’t enough. They finished 1-4 in the conference and dropped to 7-4 overall, while Urbandale improved its records to 2-3 and 10-3.
“If we would have swung two super-tiebreakers we could have won, but the girls played really well,” said Centennial coach Ryan Petersen.
Centennial got wins from Alli Gustafson and Grace Nemmers in singles. Gustafson posted a 6-4, 6-1 victory at the No. 1 spot, while Nemmers rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at the No. 5 spot.
“Alli beat a very solid No. 1 girl which is big going into regionals,” Petersen said.
Claudia Guan and Abby Bendezu teamed up for a 6-1, 3-6, 10-8 win at No. 3 doubles. The No. 5 doubles team of Ellie Bryan and Rachel Ryan also prevailed in three sets, posting a 6-0, 6-7 10-2 victory.
