Ankeny Centennial’s Lauren Gustofson proved on Tuesday that she’s a double threat on the softball diamond.
She can beat opponents with her arm and her bat.
Gustofson tossed a five-hitter with four strikeouts and also went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and four RBIs to lead the 11th-ranked Jaguars to a 6-3 victory over No. 1 Fort Dodge in the second game of a CIML Iowa Conference doubleheader at Centennial. The Dodgers won the opener, 4-1.
The Jaguars (5-2) scored five runs in the second inning to erase a 2-1 deficit in the nightcap. Sydney Morris had two RBIs in the win.
Gustofson allowed just one earned run. She improved to 3-0 on the season.
In the opener, Centennial took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning when Ella Schulz homered off Fort Dodge star Jalen Adams. It was Schulz’s second home run of the year.
However, the Dodgers (6-3) then answered with four runs in the sixth off losing pitcher Sam Klug (2-1). Klug allowed just one earned run on five hits while recording six strikeouts.
Mackenzie James went 2-for-3 for the Jaguars. Morris added a double.
Adams finished with a five-hitter. She had 12 strikeouts.
The twinbill was a rematch from last year’s Class 5A semifinals, which was won by the Dodgers, 5-3.
Centennial will play a non-conference game at No. 6 Valley (5-2) on Wednesday.
