The Ankeny Centennial baseball team picked up one win on Saturday at the Cedar Rapids Kennedy Invitational and nearly got another one.
After posting a 12-5 victory over Muscatine at Mount Mercy University, the Jaguars built a 4-0 lead against Kennedy before the host Cougars rallied for three runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth to defeat Centennial, 6-5. Coach Mark Hey’s team is now 7-10 on the season.
In the first game, the Jaguars broke away from a 5-5 tie with two runs in the fifth inning, four in the sixth and one more in the seventh. They pounded out 13 hits, six of them for extra bases.
Easton Miller went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs. Ian McGhiey also went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs, while Jackson Powell went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs.
Damin Churchman went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and one RBI. Gabriel Monosmith tripled and drove in a run, Gabe Murphy also tripled, and Joey Oakie went 2-for-4.
Kyle Miller (3-0) earned the victory with 4 2/3 innings of strong relief. He allowed just one earned run on five hits and had four strikeouts.
Muscatine’s record dropped to 9-6.
In the second game, Lincoln Lacey (0-2) went the distance on the mound against Kennedy (10-7). He allowed three earned runs on seven hits and had six strikeouts.
Kyle Miller went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs. Monosmith went 2-for-3 and drove in a run, while Oakie tripled and had one RBI.
Churchman added a double for Centennial, which will travel to Ames on Monday for a CIML Iowa Conference doubleheader against the Little Cyclones (10-6).
