For the first time since 2018, the Ankeny Centennial girls’ golf team won a dual meet against its crosstown rival.
The Jaguars defeated Ankeny, 195-199, on Tuesday at Otter Creek Golf Course. They raised their record to 2-1 in the CIML Iowa Conference, while the Hawkettes dropped to 1-1.
“Considering the cold weather, we were happy with breaking the 200 mark,” said Centennial coach John Petersen. “Last year we struggled to beat that mark. We are still pleased the work the girls did in the offseason has paid off. We are excited to play golf when it warms up!”
Ankeny had won the previous two dual meets against Centennial in 2019 and 2021–both of them at Briarwood Golf Club. The 2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I am very proud of the girls’ efforts and their continued positive attitudes despite the cold and windy conditions they faced today,” said Ankeny coach Seth Hagarty. “Gia (Blaser) had a tremendous round today, and it’s great to see all the time and effort she’s put into her game start to pay off!”
Blaser carded an 11-over-par 47 to earn medalist honors for the second straight meet. She overcame a quadruple bogey on the par-4, No. 2 hole.
Centennial’s Payton Drefke and Vivian Wilson each shot a 47 as well, but Blaser won a cardoff with a double bogey on the par-4, No. 7 hole. Drefke and Wilson each had a triple bogey.
Drefke was the runner-up by virtue of a par on the par-4, No. 8 hole. Wilson had a bogey on that hole.
Kaitlyn Ault shot a 48 for the Jaguars. Olivia Joensen carded a 53, Grace Miller had a 58, and Samantha Lazear finished with a 62.
Gabby Schnepf fired a 50 for the Hawkettes. Addison Smith and Olivia Froehlich each had a 51, Naomi SchraderBachar carded a 52, and Isabella Ross added a 54.
“Hats off to the Centennial girls–they played great today!” Hagarty said. “Our goal is to continue to improve every day we play so when this weather finally decides it’s spring, we will be ready to go!”
Centennial now owns a 6-2 advantage in the all-time series. The Jaguars won every meeting from 2014-18.
Both teams will be back on the Otter Creek course on Thursday to compete in the Toni Dickey Invitational.
“Our teams always enjoy playing each other any chance we get!” Hagarty said. “We’re looking forward to seeing them on Thursday!”
