Ty Duax recorded a hat trick for the Ankeny Centennial boys’ soccer team in Friday’s game against visiting Mason City.
His teammate, Rashidi Ishibwami, was not to be outscored.
After starting the game on the bench, Ishibwami erupted for four goals–which is sometimes referred to as a ‘haul’–and the sixth-ranked Jaguars rolled to a 10-0 victory in their CIML Iowa Conference opener.
“Rashidi played really well,” said Centennial coach Brian Duax. “His ankle was bothering him a little bit on Thursday, so he didn’t play very much (against Des Moines Lincoln) and I think that gave him a little bit of an edge for Friday. We’ve talked a lot about being more clinical in front of the goal, and he finished his chances very well.”
Centennial built a 6-0 halftime lead, then ended the game with four more goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half. It was the seventh straight win for the Jaguars, who improved to 8-1 overall.
Mason City’s records dropped to 0-2 in the conference and 0-5 overall. The team has yet to score a goal this season.
“This four-game stretch is more about our preparation and what we do versus what the opponent is going to do,” Duax said. “We should be able to control all four of these games fairly easily.”
Jesus Gonzalez had a pair of goals for Centennial, while Andrew Heckenlaible added a goal and four assists. Duax, Parker Lundberg and Kellen Welsch also had assists.
The Jaguars quickly took advantage of Mason City’s unusual defensive strategy, getting a goal from Duax just 45 seconds into the game and adding four more within the first 15 minutes.
“We’re trying to fine-tune some things, and one of them is how we start games and how we press,” Duax said. “And instantly, we noticed that they were playing with three guys in the back, which against our attacking three is probably not a good idea. And we punished them pretty early and often.”
Goalkeepers Andrew Nelson, Noah Sleeper and Brooks Wee combined on the shutout. None of them had to make a save.
Centennial will host an Iowa Conference game against Fort Dodge (0-6) on Tuesday. Like Mason City, the Dodgers have yet to score a goal this season.
