The bats were silent on Thursday for the Ankeny Centennial baseball team.
The fourth-ranked Jaguars were held to just six hits in a non-conference doubleheader at Waukee and were swept by the Warriors, 4-0 and 3-2.
“Waukee’s a pretty good team,” said Centennial coach Mark Hey. “We saw three really outstanding pitchers for them.”
Waukee’s Camden Kaufman tossed a one-hitter with eight strikeouts in the opener. Kyle Miller singled for the Jaguars’ lone hit.
Joey Oakie took the loss, allowing two earned runs on two hits over the first four innings. He had six strikeouts.
The Warriors (3-0) then scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to complete the sweep. Sean Stewart suffered the loss in relief of Emerson Alberhasky, who fanned eight over the first four innings.
“All four of the pitchers we used in the doubleheader threw outstanding,” Hey said. “We maybe gave up a few more walks than we’d like, but they didn’t give up many hits. It was just a tough night for the hitters because the wind was blowing in.”
Stewart went 3-for-4 for the Jaguars (0-3) in the nightcap. Ian McGhiey and Easton Pratt each drove in a run.
Centennial will play a doubleheader at Marshalltown on Monday. It will be the Jaguars’ CIML Iowa Conference opener.
“We think we’ll get our whole team together here soon,” Hey said. “I like how hard our kids are working. I think they’ll be a pretty good squad. We’ve just got to get a few more reps under us, and we’ll be alright.”
