The Ankeny baseball team rallied from an early 4-0 deficit to beat Davenport North, 6-4, in the Tim Heggen Classic on Saturday at Ankeny Centennial.
After North scored three runs in the top of the second inning to make it 4-0, the 10th-ranked Hawks answered with a run in the bottom of the frame. They scored two in the third and one in the fourth to tie it up, then added two more in the sixth to raise their overall record to 13-8.
Alex Griess (4-0) earned the victory with two shutout innings in relief of sophomore John Morris, who made his first varsity start. Griess allowed no hits and one walk and had two strikeouts before Reid Johnson came in to get the final three outs.
Johnson also doubled and drove in a run. Teammate Carson Agan hit a solo home run, his first of the season.
Dylan Schlee went 2-for-4 and had two RBIs. Max Watson also knocked in two runs.
The Wildcats dropped to 6-13 on the year.
Ankeny will travel to Mason City on Monday for a CIML Iowa Conference doubleheader against the River Hawks (12-12). The Hawks swept a twinbill against Mason City on May 31.
