Jace Anderson has rediscovered his love for the sport of wrestling.
The Ankeny senior has committed to wrestle for Minnesota State-Mankato, an NCAA Division II program.
“I think the toughest part of the decision was deciding to wrestle in college,” said Anderson, a four-time state qualifier and a three-time placewinner. “After state, I was devastated and wanted nothing to do with the sport, but it’s such a huge part of my life. I can’t imagine the next four to five years without it.”
Anderson posted a 34-5 record and placed fourth at 152 pounds in the Class 3A state tournament this season. He earned his 100th career victory at the district tournament.
Anderson also placed fourth as a junior at 145, compiling a 36-8 mark. As a sophomore, he placed seventh at 138 and helped the Hawks to a fifth-place finish in the team standings.
Anderson said he picked the Mavericks over Loras College, Western Colorado and Northern Iowa. His brother, Trever, is a freshman on the UNI squad.
“The biggest thing that drew me to Mankato was the guys on the team,” Anderson said. “I really got along with everyone on my visit, and it just felt like home. The campus and facilities are amazing, and I truly believe in the coaching staff and believe that they can help me achieve my goals at the next level.”
