The Ankeny Centennial girls’ tennis team opened its season on Thursday with an 11-0 victory over visiting Waukee in a CIML Conference dual meet.
The contest was played under sunny skies with temperatures in the 50s.
“We had a great start with an 11-0 win,” said Centennial coach Alli Gustafson. “Everyone on the team stepped up to the plate and got a win. It was a great start to the season. We won singles in straight sets, which gave everyone the confidence they needed on our first night of matches.”
Centennial also swept the doubles matches in straight sets, but not without being severely tested. The Jaguars won four tiebreakers in the doubles–two of them by the No. 4 duo of Megan Yuan and Madison Price.
“We had several tiebreaks that we pulled out,” Gustafson said. “Ara (Lofgren) and Jenna (Benkufsky) played confidently and won a second-set tiebreak. They played as a team, working off of one another. Madison and Megan pulled out two tiebreaks in their match. Their consistency and positive attitudes helped them stay collected. They fought for every point and left everything on the court.”
The Jaguars will travel to Urbandale on Friday for another conference dual meet against the J-Hawks.
“We’re excited to get back on the court again,” Gustafson said.
