A dominant performance in singles allowed the Ankeny boys’ tennis team to pick up its first win of the season on Tuesday.
The Hawks swept all six of the singles matches–five of them in straight sets–and went on to defeat visiting Southeast Polk, 8-3, in a CIML Conference dual meet.
“We played well in singles,” said Ankeny coach Ron Miller. “We were missing two (players) for doubles, so we struggled a bit. Despite the score, I thought the Southeast Polk kids played hard right to the end.”
Ankeny got singles wins from Mason Lyons, Dylan Victor, Avin Legg, Aiden Walker, Ethan Bovee and Cale Josten. Walker won in three sets at the No. 4 position.
Victor and Legg then teamed up for another triumph at No. 2 doubles. Walker and Josten won in three sets at the No. 3 spot.
The Hawks are now 1-2 in the conference and 1-3 overall. Southeast Polk’s records dropped to 0-3 and 1-4.
Ankeny will host a conference meet against No. 10 Dowling Catholic (4-1) on Thursday.
