The Ankeny Centennial girls’ track team earned a fourth-place finish in the Larry Weier Invitational on Monday at Dowling Catholic, while Ankeny tied for sixth in the eight-team field.
Dowling easily won its own meet with 93.5 points. Johnston was second with 66.5.
“It was a beautiful night to compete, and we were able to bring a lot of our younger girls to get some races in,” said Centennial coach Tyler Asbe, whose team finished with 32.5 points. “Our Drake qualifiers had a light night to prepare for the Drake Relays.”
Ankeny, which scored 12 points, also rested many of its top athletes.
“Most of the Drake qualifiers stayed back to train,” said Ankeny coach T.J. Jumper. “It was great for some of our team to gain some more experience. It was a very positive experience, and we are proud of how they competed.”
Centennial’s Anika Mohrhauser raced to a victory in the 3,000. She posted a time of 10:40.48.
“That was a big PR for her,” Asbe said.
The Jaguars also won the 4×400 relay. The team of Layla Hughes, Maddy LaVoi, Addie Pollock and Julia Flick was clocked in 4:04.98.
Ankeny’s Reagan Hanfelt won the high jump with a leap of 5 feet 6 inches. She tied her own school record.
“She was very consistent in her jumps,” Jumper said.
Kambria Leazer tied for third for the Jaguars in that event, clearing the bar at 5-2. She also placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 16-8.5.
Ankeny got a runner-up finish from Madeline Poock in the 100 hurdles. She was clocked in 16.66 seconds, which set a personal record.
Dana Cleveland placed third for the Jaguars in the 400 hurdles. She posted a time of 1:13.13.
Centennial’s Tallie Plueger took fourth in the 800 in 2:30.97 and also anchored the runner-up 4×800 relay. Olivia Larsen was fifth in the 100 in 13.38.
Cassidy Griggs placed sixth in the 400 in 1:04.34.
“Cassidy had a great night running three 400s and had a huge PR as well,” Asbe said.
Ankeny’s Lauren Jackson placed fifth in the 1,500 in a time of 5:08.89. Teammate Maliya Cobb was fifth in the discus with a throw of 100-9.
“Maliya PR’d in both the shot put and discus,” Jumper said. “This was her first time breaking 30 feet in the shot and 100 feet in the discus.”
The Jaguars finished third in the 4×100, 4×200 and shuttle hurdle relays.
