The season ended on Wednesday for the Ankeny girls’ golf team.
A long trip to Waterloo for a Class 4A regional meet also marked the end of Seth Hagarty’s coaching tenure at the school.
Hagarty, who has also served as an assistant coach for the girls’ basketball program, is moving back to Jesup this summer to be closer to both his and his wife’s parents.
“It will be a big change but a change that we know is the right one!” Hagarty said. “I have thoroughly enjoyed coaching this team and helping all of the girls learn to love the game of golf. I wish them all the best in their futures, whatever it may hold!”
Ankeny placed fifth in the 10-team field on the Irv Warren Golf Course. The Hawkettes shot a 400.
Second-ranked Linn-Mar (Marion) posted a score of 334 to win the regional title. No. 4 Cedar Rapids Washington placed second with a 353 and also qualified for the state meet, which will be held on May 25-26 at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny.
“Although we did not make it to state, the season was still a successful one as we accomplished our two main goals: we had fun and got better!” Hagarty said. “Irv Warren was a new course for us and while the course was in great shape, we were not familiar with the course and the tree-lined fairways bothered us at times.”
Morgan Rupp of Linn-Mar carded a 2-over-par 74 to earn medalist honors. Natalie Henson of Marshalltown was the runner-up with a 78.
Addison Smith fired a 91 to lead Ankeny. She placed ninth as an individual.
“Addie finished the season out with a PR,” Hagarty said. “She did a great job today of staying out of the trouble and hitting quality golf shots throughout her entire round!”
Gia Blaser and Gracie Block each shot a 102 for the Hawkettes. Jori Webb carded a 105, Isabella Ross had a 107, and Ava Sesker finished with a 136.
