The Ankeny volleyball team closed out the regular season with a 22-14 record after winning one of three matches at the Dike-New Hartford Quadrangular on Thursday.
The eighth-ranked Hawkettes faced three ranked opponents from Class 2A, including No. 1 Dike-New Hartford, which might be the state’s best team regardless of class. The Wolverines (44-0) got 13 kills from Payton Petersen and posted a 25-7, 25-17 win over Ankeny to remain unbeaten.
The Hawkettes played all three matches without junior outside hitter Olivia Eike, who was out of the lineup due to medical reasons.
“There’s not much to say. It was the same story with a different starter out,” said Ankeny coach Liz Baethke. “We needed Olivia’s block and offensive contribution.”
Kamryn Scheib had 10 of her team’s 15 kills for the Hawkettes, who were outhit by Dike-New Hartford by a .385 to .088 margin. She also had seven digs.
Lauren Dockendorff dished out nine assists, Ady Brecht and Ava Wille each had a block, and Baileigh Carlsen contributed nine digs. Ilana Coleman completed all seven of her serves.
Ankeny’s lone victory came against No. 11 Wapsie Valley, 25-14, 25-15. The Warriors, who were outhit by a .344 to .143 margin, dropped to 26-16 on the season.
Scheib finished with nine kills and nine digs. She also completed all 11 of her serves.
Reagan Hanfelt had eight kills, five blocks and an ace. Cloey Wiederin had 12 assists, and Dockendorff added 10.
Carlsen racked up 10 digs in the win.
In the closest match of the night, the Hawkettes dropped a 25-23, 26-24 decision to No. 6 Sumner-Fredericksburg. The Cougars improved to 24-13.
Hanfelt had seven kills and two aces in the loss. Scheib and Marlee Ellison each added six kills, while Dockendorff and Wiederin each had 12 assists.
Wille made a pair of blocks, while Carlsen had 13 digs and completed all 12 of her serves. Coleman added six digs.
“We have a lot of younger kids getting some quality varsity opportunities, so that will pay off down the road,” Baethke said. “However, it’s been pretty frustrating to capitalize on the momentum we’ve created as of late. The only positive is, it doesn’t seem to faze my players having a new lineup every week.”
Ankeny will now prepare for postseason play. The Hawkettes will host Urbandale (9-21) or Council Bluffs Jefferson (5-20) in a Class 5A regional semifinal on Thursday.
