Although the Ankeny boys’ swimming team traveled to Indianola on Tuesday for a non-conference dual meet against the Indians, most of the competition involved intrasquad battles among the Hawks.
Ankeny swept the top two places in all 11 events and rolled to a 137-33 victory at the Indianola YMCA.
“We had a fun meet,” said Ankeny coach Dustin Rhoads, whose team evened its overall dual-meet record at 1-1. “A lot of our guys were able to swim different events and race each other. Our first road trip of the year was a blast and getting food afterwards as a team was just one of the small things that made it all so fun!”
Owen Evans, Owen Schwebach and Brock Peterson each won two individual events for the Hawks. Peterson and Schwebach also swam on a pair of winning relays.
Evans won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:52.15. He later captured the 100 freestyle in 50.40 seconds.
Schwebach took the 50 freestyle in 22.46 and the 100 backstroke in 57.12. Peterson won the 100 butterfly in 54.48 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.08.
Ankeny’s Nicholas Robie won the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:08.76. Teammate Finn Stukerjurgen took the 500 freestyle in 5:08.89.
The Hawks opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:42.81. That team consisted of Peterson, Bryer Pearson, Schwebach and Evans.
Schwebach and Peterson later teamed up with Andrew Law and Pearson to win the 200 freestyle relay. That unit was clocked in 1:32.12.
Ankeny’s “B” unit placed second in that event in 1:32.97. That team was comprised of Evans, Roe Denny, Austin Troyer and Stukerjurgen.
The Hawks closed out the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay in 3:37.81. That unit consisted of Denny, Wilson Pous-Ojeda, Nicholas De la Cuba and Stukerjurgen.
“We are continuing to train hard this week and focus on our training and not just the meets,” Rhoads said. “Our depth is growing and will help us this week and hopefully give us confidence next week against some of the top teams we will face at three different meets.”
Ankeny will host a CIML Conference dual meet against Dowling Catholic on Thursday at Trail Point Aquatics Center.
“It’s a big one against Dowling,” Rhoads said. “It’s always exciting racing them, and I know the boys tied them last year (85-85) so we will definitely be ready to go and race hard to try to protect our home pool and swim well! I hope we can have another big crowd! Our team is pretty good and deserves it.”
