Ankeny Centennial offensive lineman Blaine Sandquist has decided to follow in teammate Connor Welsch’s footsteps.
Sandquist announced on Monday that he will join Iowa State’s football program as a preferred walk-on. Welsch, a defensive back, accepted a similar offer from the Cyclones last month.
“I looked into a couple other schools and went on a few visits, but Iowa State felt like home,” said Sandquist. “I grew up going to Iowa State (games) and wanted to be in Ames.”
Sandquist helped the Jaguars to a 7-5 record and a trip to the Class 5A semifinals. He was named to the all-district second team in District 1.
Sandquist and Welsch will be reunited with former teammate Easton Miller, who joined the Cyclones last year as a preferred walk-on.
“It was really my friends and coaches that pushed to me try and play at the next level,” Sandquist said. “I’m grateful for the opportunity in front of me and ready to work!”
