Ankeny Centennial quarterback Trenton Smith has committed to play for Iowa Western Community College.
The Reivers went 12-1 last season and won a second consecutive NJCAA Division I national championship with a 61-14 victory over East Mississippi.
“From the quarterback position perspective, their head coach (Scott Strohmeier) is the quarterbacks coach also, so I would be working with him most of my time,” said Smith. “Another thing that I loved is that some of my former (Centennial) teammates are currently there–Brody Targgart, Hudson Simon and Cavan Jones. I also loved their facilities and got a really good feeling from their coaching staff and faculty as a whole.”
Smith helped the Jaguars to a 7-5 record and a Class 5A semifinal appearance in 2023. He completed 148-of-227 passes for 1,848 yards and 21 touchdowns.
Smith was named to the Class 5A all-state second team by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association. He was a repeat pick to the District 1 first team.
“I looked at a lot of schools, but it ultimately came down to taking visits and finding which place felt like home,” Smith said. “Once I got up to Iowa Western and had some good conversations with the coaches, it made the decision a lot easier.”
