Senior guards Carson Johnson of Ankeny and Luke Winkel of Ankeny Centennial were both repeat selections to the CIML Conference first team by a vote of the league’s boys’ basketball coaches. They were both unanimous picks.
Johnson led the Hawks to an 18-7 record and a trip to the Class 4A semifinals. He was the second-leading scorer in Class 4A with an average of 22.9 points per game.
Johnson shot 46.8 percent from 3-point range (66-of-141) and 88.9 percent at the free-throw line (128-of-144). He also dished out a team-high 82 assists.
Winkel averaged 21.4 points a game, which ranked fourth in Class 4A, while leading the Jaguars to a 17-7 mark. He was a unanimous choice for the second year in a row.
Winkel shot 40.3 percent from behind the arc (58-of-144). He led Centennial with 110 assists and 32 steals.
Senior forward Chase Schutty of Centennial and sophomore guard Rio Aguirre were both named to the CIML Conference second team.
Schutty averaged 9.3 points and a team-high 8.8 rebounds. He also led the Jaguars with 29 blocks.
Aguirre averaged 13.3 points and led the Hawks with 34 steals. He shot 42.2 percent from 3-point range (62-of-147).
Aguirre’s brother, Lio, was a repeat pick to the all-conference third team. The senior guard averaged 12.2 points and a team-high 6.2 rebounds.
Senior forward Cash Schoolen of Ankeny received all-conference honorable mention for the second straight year. Other honorable mention selections were senior forward Cade Pederson of Ankeny and senior guards Nick Vaske and Connor Welsch and senior forward Joey Oakie of Centennial.
