While the Ankeny Centennial boys’ track team dominated the Southeast Polk Relays on Thursday, Ankeny’s Tyler Sickerson raced to perhaps the most impressive victory of the night.
Sickerson easily won the 100 in a blistering time of 10.55 seconds, breaking the school record. It was the fifth-fastest time ever in Iowa and ranks 83rd in the U.S. for 2024.
“Based on my indoor season, I was sure I going to run fast but I’ve been dealing with an injury and some sickness, and that kind of brought some doubt in,” said Sickerson. “I’m very glad to get the rust off and run a PR.”
The Jaguars won the meet with 164 points, finishing 41 points ahead of runner-up Pella. Ankeny placed seventh in the eight-team field with 50 points.
Centennial won six events–all but two of them in the relays. The Jaguars captured the sprint medley, 4×100, 4x 200 and distance medley events.
Centennial’s Cael Woods won the 400 hurdles in a time of 56.16 seconds. He also took third in the 110 hurdles in 15.21.
The Jaguars’ other victory came in the long jump, where JJ Morgan earned the win with a leap of 21 feet 9 inches. Ankeny’s Mason Randolph jumped 20-7.5 and took second.
Ankeny’s other win came in the 110 hurdles. Landon Pote turned in a time of 15.13 seconds.
Placing second for Centennial were Robert McGhee in the 200 (22.49), Max Dickinson in the shot put (47-6.5) and Kaleb Kruzich in the high jump (6-1). Valley’s Ben Sorensen also cleared the bar at 6-1 and won the high jump based on fewer misses.
Centennial got third-place finishes from Elijah Porter in the 100 (11.02) and AJ Schermerhorn in the 3,200 (9:38.76). The Jaguars added a second-place finish in the 4×400 relay.
Both teams will compete in the Brooks Relays on Saturday at Valley.
