Ankeny’s Josten, Centennial duo earn runner-up finishes at Hoefle Invite

The Mason City boys’ tennis team racked up 86 points to win the Dennis Hoefle Invitational on Friday at the Prairie Ridge courts.

On a cold and windy day, Ankeny Centennial placed sixth in the eight-team field with 50 points. Host Ankeny finished seventh with 36 points.

The Jaguars got a second-place finish from the No. 3 doubles team of Jack Halverson and Luke Valerio-Garsow. They advanced to the championship match before dropping a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Dowling Catholic’s Landon Cody and Rob Beecher.

Ankeny’s Cale Josten was the runner-up at No. 2 singles. He won a pair of matches in straight sets before falling in the finals to Mason City’s Zander Dickinson, 0-6, 6-4, 1-0 (9).

Centennial’s Brayden Wellendorf and Nick Hiney placed fourth at No. 1 doubles. They opened the tournament with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Ankeny’s Dylan Victor and Garrett Weichers.

The Jaguars also won head-to-head matches against their crosstown rival at No. 1 singles, No. 2 doubles and No. 4 doubles.

Mason City swept both singles flights and also won the No. 2 doubles crown. Valley took the No. 1 doubles flight, while Des Moines Roosevelt captured the No. 4 doubles title.

Here are the match-by-match results for both Ankeny and Centennial:

No. 1 singles

Earp (AC) lost to Love (J), 6-0, 6-0; beat Bodensteiner (A), 8-7 (5); lost to Rogers (V), 8-5.

Bodensteiner (A) lost to Clark (DC), 6-1, 6-0; lost to Earp (AC), 8-7 (5); beat Kleis (DCG), 8-4.

No. 2 singles

Josten (A) beat Rose (V), 6-4, 6-0; beat Seda (DC), 6-2, 7-5; lost to Dickinson (MC), 0-6, 6-4, 1-0 (9).

Walker (AC) lost to Dickinson (MC), 6-2, 6-4; beat Havlick (DMR), 8-2; beat Fitzhugh (DCG), 8-6.

No. 1 doubles

Wellendorf-Hiney (AC) beat Victor-Weichers (A), 6-3, 6-3; lost to Berg-Sissell (V), 7-6, 6-3; lost to Kehoe-Bright (DMR), 6-1, 6-1.

Victor-Weichers (A) lost to Wellendorf-Hiney (AC), 6-3, 6-3; lost to Bauer-Wilkens (DCG), 8-4; beat Driscoll-Huneke (J), 8-7 (2).

No. 2 doubles

Smith-Law (AC) lost to Fratianni-Singaram (V), 6-2, 6-4; beat Schlosser-Riesberg (A), 8-2; lost to Arnold-Cataldi (DMR), 8-5.

Schlosser-Riesberg (A) lost to Townsend-Cataldo (DC), 6-2, 6-0; lost to Smith-Law (AC), 8-2; beat Harbaugh-Leonard (DCG), 8-5.

No. 3 doubles

J. Halverson-Valerio-Garsow (AC) beat L. Halverson-Bonefas (DCG), 6-2, 6-0; beat Bajpai-Zhang (J), 6-4, 7-6 (5); lost to Cody-Beecher (DC), 6-1, 6-3.

Black-D. Lueck (A) lost to Bajpai-Zhang (J), 6-4, 7-5; beat L. Halverson-Bonefas (DCG), 8-0; lost to Rickert-Scott (V), 8-1.

Malone-Sanders (AC) lost to Anderson-Eide (MC), 6-0, 6-2; beat Geest-C. Lueck (A), 8-4; lost to Flynn-Dessimoz (DC), 8-4.

Geest-C. Lueck (A) lost to W. Larson-J.H. Larson (V), 6-1, 6-3; lost to Malone-Sanders (AC), 8-4; beat Huinker-Worley (DCG), 8-2.
