It’s been a rainy week for the Ankeny and Ankeny Centennial girls’ golf teams.
The Hawkettes and Jaguars were supposed to play on Tuesday at Copper Creek, but the CIML Conference triangular meet against Southeast Polk was postponed due to rain.
On Thursday, Ankeny and Centennial dodged some more raindrops while competing in the Southeast Polk Invitational, which was also held at Copper Creek. A total of 14 teams participated.
“There were some really tough holes for everyone, especially during the rain in the afternoon,” said Ankeny coach Kelley Emke.
Gilbert shot a 301 to win the team title. Waukee Northwest took second with a 325.
Centennial posted a 369 total and finished eighth.
“We are happy we got back to breaking 370,” said Centennial coach John Petersen.
Ankeny, meanwhile, placed 13th with a 413.
“It definitely was not our best meet, but I’m proud of how they all kept fighting to come back from the hard holes and conditions,” Emke said.
Marshalltown’s Natalie Henson carded a 2-under-par 69 to earn medalist honors. Eden Lohrbach of Gilbert was the runner-up with a 70.
Payton Drefke fired a 76 to lead the Jaguars, placing seventh in a field of 81 golfers. She made back-to-back birdies on the Nos. 2 and 3 holes and duplicated the feat on Nos. 15 and 16.
Centennial’s Brooke Ridout shot a 96. Kaylee Sprecher carded a 98, Kate Geiselhart and Sophia Wilson each had a 99, and Cate Trewet finished with a 101.
“We know we need to get below 360 to be more competitive as we get closer to districts,” Petersen said.
Addison Smith shot a 96 to lead the Hawkettes. Isabella Ross carded a 98, Gracie Block had a 101, Ava Sesker fired a 118, and Aubree Moeller added a 136.
Both Ankeny and Centennial will play in the conference meet on Wednesday at Otter Creek.
