When a dual-sport athlete like Piper Zeman suffers an injury, it hurts the depth of multiple teams.
The Ankeny Centennial sophomore injured her knee while playing for the Jaguars’ girls’ soccer team at the Tournament of Champions in Bettendorf on April 26. She found out later that she had torn an ACL.
Thus, Zeman will miss the rest of the soccer and track seasons.
“It’s a heartbreaker,” said Centennial girls’ soccer coach Chris Allen. “She was doing well in both sports.”
Zeman, a forward, played in the Jaguars’ first nine games with three starts. She had helped the team to a No. 6 ranking in Class 3A.
On the track, Zeman focused primarily on the middle-distance events for the Centennial girls’ squad. She ran on the seventh-place 4×800 relay in the Jim Duncan Invitational on April 13 at Drake Stadium.
“It’s very tough and sad,” said Centennial girls’ track coach Tyler Asbe. “She’s a great kid and strong in both sports.”
