It’s time for the Ankeny boys’ soccer team to regroup.
The seventh-ranked Hawks closed out the regular season on Tuesday with a 1-0 loss to visiting Urbandale, which snapped a five-game losing skid. The J-Hawks scored the game’s only goal midway through the second half at Ankeny Stadium.
“We had no injuries and no red (cards), but there were no other positives,” said Ankeny coach Trevor Fuccio. “It was the worst 60 (of 80) minutes we’ve played all year.”
The J-Hawks finished 4-4 in the CIML Conference and improved to 7-8 overall. Ankeny’s records dropped to 3-5 and 9-8.
After posting a 1-0 win over Ankeny Centennial on May 3, the Hawks were held scoreless in their final two games. They played without five starters in Friday’s 3-0 loss to No. 5 Valley and were still not at full strength on Tuesday.
“Everyone should be back next week,” Fuccio said.
Ankeny will host Cedar Rapids Kennedy (3-11) in a Class 4A substate semifinal on Monday. The Cougars advanced with a 3-1 win over Cedar Rapids Jefferson on Tuesday, avenging an earlier 4-2 loss.
