Sean Stewart recorded 10 strikeouts over the first 6 2/3 innings to lead the fifth-ranked Ankeny Centennial baseball team to an 8-3 victory at No. 4 Dallas Center-Grimes in a non-conference game on Thursday, handing the Mustangs their first loss of the season.
Stewart (2-0) allowed just two earned runs on six hits before reaching his pitch limit with two outs in the seventh inning. Johnathan Carrasco came in and got another strikeout to close out the win.
The Jaguars improved to 7-2 on the season. Dallas Center-Grimes dropped to 9-1.
Stewart allowed a solo home run in the first inning before Centennial scored three runs in the third and two more in the fourth to build a 5-1 lead. After Dallas Center-Grimes cut the deficit to 5-3 with two runs in the fifth, the Jaguars used a three-run sixth to seal the triumph.
Carrasco went 2-for-2 with a walk, scored two runs and drove in three more. He hit a two-run single in the fourth and added an RBI single in the sixth.
Jackson Reed went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and scored three times. His leadoff double ignited the third-inning rally.
Isaac Bruhl had an RBI double in the sixth. Joey Oakie knocked in the Jaguars’ final run with a grounder.
Kohen Bollwinkel and Stewart had Centennial’s other hits. Bollwinkel scored two runs.
The Jaguars will host a CIML Conference doubleheader against No. 1 Johnston (13-0) on Monday.
