After shooting its worst score of the season on Wednesday, the Ankeny Centennial boys’ golf team focused on finding ways to get better.
The Jaguars shot a 311 in a CIML Conference triangular meet at River Valley Golf Course in Adel. They lost to Waukee (308) by three strokes, but easily defeated Urbandale (369).
“The message afterwards was that we all know we are capable of better,” said Centennial coach Andrew Reedy, whose team is now 2-4 in the conference. “So let’s work toward finding a solution to the problems that are holding us back from shooting the scores we have the potential to shoot. They all responded well, and I know they will put in the effort to get back to the type of golf we expect as a team.”
Waukee’s Jonathan Ward was the only golfer to break par. He carded a 1-under 71 to earn medalist honors.
Centennial’s Nathan Boehlert was the runner-up with a 75. He had a pair of birdies on the day.
“Nathan didn’t love his round, but again he hit it fairly well and continued his trend of being our most consistent player,” Reedy said.
Jett Lovanh shot a 77 and placed fourth for the Jaguars.
“Jett has also been very consistent,” Reedy said. “His round was quite eventful as he was hitting it a little bit all over the place, but he was able to scramble. Credit to him for that!”
Centennial’s Charlie Morrissey finished fifth with a 78.
“Charlie had yet another day where he just was never able to settle into his round,” Reedy said. “He did, however, make the best of it. Him and I both feel like he is close; he just hasn’t put it together yet in competition. I believe his best golf is in front of him.”
Jackson Lewis carded an 81 for the Jaguars. McCoy Miller had an 82, and Tiernan Logan added an 84.
Lewis had a 1-over 37 on the back nine to provide Centennial’s fourth score.
“He had some stretches of the golf he knows he can play,” Reedy said of Lewis.
The Jaguars will compete in the Turk Bowman Invitational on Monday at the Ames Golf and Country Club.
