Ankeny Centennial boys’ golf coach Andrew Reedy tried to look on the bright side following Wednesday’s CIML Conference triangular meet at Briarwood Golf Club.
Fourth-ranked Waukee Northwest shot a 290 to finish nine strokes ahead of No. 6 Southeast Polk. No. 9 Centennial lost to both teams after posting a 303 total.
The Jaguars finished with a 2-6 league record.
“We were hoping for better today, but there were a lot of positives,” said Reedy.
Northwest’s Landry Vogelaar carded a 1-under-par 71 to earn medalist honors. He edged teammate Zach Petsche by one stroke.
Centennial’s Charlie Morrissey placed third with a 73. He made three birdies on the front nine.
“Charlie had about a 10-foot putt (on No. 18) to keep his streak of even par or better rounds going,” Reedy said. “But he missed it and ended up at 73. He is playing nice, solid golf right now, and we are confident he can keep it going.”
Nathan Boehlert and Tiernan Logan each shot a 76 for the Jaguars. They took ninth and 10th, respectively.
“Those two are also playing some nice golf,” Reedy said. “I love how they are showing some consistency and some signs of their games starting to settle in for the homestretch of our season.”
Preston Zinn provided Centennial’s fourth score with a 78. The senior was making his varsity debut on Senior Day.
“Preston played in our No. 6 spot today and played so good for 17 holes,” Reedy said. “He finished with a 78, but was just 1-over through 17 holes. He had some trouble on 18, and it made what was a really great round of golf look worse with the score. I am really proud of him for how he played and for the way he handled the disappointment of the tough finish. He is a kid that has been with the program for four years now and got his first varsity opportunity. For him to score for us today was a really neat thing for him on Senior Day.”
McCoy Miller fired an 80 for the Jaguars. Jett Lovanh added an 81.
Centennial will compete in the Joe August Invitational on Thursday at Elmwood Country Club.
