The third-ranked Ankeny girls’ wrestling team remained unbeaten in dual-meet competition with a 57-18 victory over Valley in its CIML Conference opener on Tuesday at Urbandale.
Ankeny won six of the eight matches that were contested to raise its overall record to 4-0.
“We were happy with the way we competed in the limited matches that we had,” said Ankeny coach Dustin Roland. “Valley was missing some girls due to a conflicting school event, which is always unfortunate.”
Ankeny recorded five falls on the night. All of them came in the opening period.
Eighth-ranked Elyse Engebretson needed just 20 seconds to pin Vannesa Reyes at 125 pounds. Shortly thereafter, No. 1 Hayden Bratland almost matched her, pinning Kimberlee Rhymes in 29 seconds.
No. 4 Lauren Watson at 105, Mady Postma at 135 and Aliayah Shade at 155 had the team’s other pins. Shade is filling in for No. 1 Haylee McGrew, who is nursing an injury.
“Aliayah defeated a solid girl, and Mady picked up right where she left off at the Donnybrook (last week),” Roland said. “Lauren wrestled well and continues to be very coachable.”
The closest match of the night came at 115, where No. 4 Nora Bockes of Ankeny posted a 10-7 decision over No. 8 Aaleyah McMaster in a matchup of rated wrestlers.
“That was the key matchup of the meet,” Roland said. “Nora wrestled well enough to come out on top. If she cleans up one mistake, we are walking away with a major decision. Nora, along with all of our girls, have wrestled such high level competition so far this year that we are going to be battle-tested when it matters.”
Ankeny’s Aysia Moser at 170, No. 5 Trudy Haag at 120, Bradlynn Virchow at 130 and No. 7 Jammie Krah at 145 each won by forfeit.
Valley got pins from No. 9 Elly Wagner at 190 and Avery Buhr at 110. The Tigers’ Olivia Nabiliwa won by fofeit at 235.
Ankeny will host the Ankeny Centennial Duals on Saturday at Northview Middle School.
