For the second week in a row, bonus points proved to be the difference for the Ankeny wrestlers.
The Hawks, who are sixth the Class 3A dual rankings, recorded five falls and a pair of technical falls in a 40-28 victory at No. 24 Waukee on Thursday. They improved to 3-0 in the CIML Conference and overall.
The Warriors also won seven matches, but had just two pins and a major decision. Two of their victories came by a single point and another one came in overtime.
Ankeny got falls from Hayden Fontana at 120 pounds, second-ranked Truman Folkers at 126, No. 8 Calvin Rathjen at 132, Kash Johnson at 157 and Andrew Haase at 215. No. 5 Ben Walsh at 113 and Jacob Schlee at 175 each won by a technical fall.
Coach Jack Wignall’s team used a similar formula to beat No. 7 Ankeny Centennial on Dec. 12. The Hawks also had five falls among their seven wins en route to a 40-33 victory in the crosstown rivalry.
Ankeny will compete in the Battle of Waterloo on Friday and Saturday. Ankeny is seeded second in the Al Frost Bracket.
